10 Ways to Cure a Bad Day
I have been going through a lot of change recently with a new job, moving back home, adjusting to a new world and with change sometimes brings some bad days scattered with just uncertainty and adjusting. Sometimes, when you’re having a bad day it can seem like it will never end. I’ve had my fair share of days where a bad day seems like a bad life and honestly, I can contest, it’s not. That bad day, will always end, but sometimes you have to end it yourself and not just sit around and wait for it to go away. Here, I have compiled a list of TEN DIFFERENT WAYS to cheer yourself up when you’ve been having a not so good day, and yes, they have been tested!
Sunshine cheers everyone up. Fresh air helps to clear the mind and cleanse the soul. Get some color on your skin and enjoy the world around you. Ideas involve sitting outside with a book, going for a walk or run, taking your bike out for a spin or even just sitting and listening to the waves. If you’re stuck at work, I also use this as an excuse for a coffee break, to take a walk and clear my head.
Make plans with a friend
Getting out with a friend and just sitting and chatting over coffee or drinks will guarantee a mood lift! Engaging with someone who cares about you always brings a little sunshine, whether it be a good friend, a co-worker, another creative collaborator, or a family member, it will always be something you won’t regret. Sometimes I dread going out, but at the end of the day, I don’t mind going out and being with my friends, I just like to be lazy or antisocial sometimes. Sometime, you can’t always make same day plans, but that’s okay. Making the plans for a later date can give you something to look forward to, making your day that much better.
Watch one of your favorite movies
Sometimes cuddling up with some popcorn and wine, while watching your favorite movie is just what the doctor called for. I can never see this ruining my day and relaxing after a long day of work is never a bad idea. If you can’t watch your favorite movie, try watching a new one you haven’t seen before or even make plans with a friend and go to the movies!
Call an old friend or your family who you haven’t spoken to in a while
Just like making plans with a friend, talking with someone who cares about you really lifts your mood. Just chatting about nothing or even anything can only bring your mood up! Use it to catch up on family stuff, their life and take your mind off of your day by focusing on someone you care about. Spend the time to care and realize that the bad in your life is only right now and there is so much more to the world.
Take your dog for a walk
Don’t have one? Borrow one. Getting outside, as a mentioned, can really bring sunshine into your day, both mentally and physically. Getting to spend time with a dog on top of that, would only boost my mood! BONUS: get in some puppy snuggles after!
Have a “cheat meal”
A “cheat meal”, or as I like to say a “treat meal” is the perfect thing to cheer up your day! “Cheat meal” is such a cliche word, but honestly I know everyone has that one meal that will pop up in their head when someone says it. Take the time to indulge and treat yourself because you truly deserve it!
Speaking of, go to a workout class that you enjoy, or just go to the gym
Sweat it out! I think getting moving and sweating can boost anyone’s attitude. Take an hour to go to a class like yoga or Zumba that will get your body moving, take your mind off of the world and to exercise! If there isn’t a class that you enjoy available, just go to the gym and do a workout or stretch. I find stretching and moving just gets the blood flowing bringing yourself into a better space.
Have a self care night
Lather yourself up in some yummy oil, take an epsom salt bath or LUSH bath bomb bath, do a face mask, wash your hair, paint your nails, whatever you can think of that will bring you joy and make you feel all bubbly inside, do it! Spending the night just focusing on “me time” with a few of my favorite items is such a great way to cheer you up and ideal for your mental health. Take a bath with a face mask on, light a candle, put on some Netflix and relax.
Read a book
Sometimes the best way to cheer yourself up, is to escape reality. I use reading as a way to change my mind off everything I am worried and stressed about. I can take myself into someone else’s world and next thing I know, I have finished a book and need another one.
Cook a good meal
Now, this could be just me, but when I have a bad day, I love to cook! Being able to control the ingredients, the meal and whatever I am feeling to create something delicious is just a great feeling. I can do the whole “cheat meal” I mentioned before or I go the healthy and happy route, where I make a healthy meal that is both satisfying and good for me. My favorite “bad day” meal is mac and cheese with a veggie burger or anything with pesto! What’s your “bad day” meal?
